Just Like That

"You never know the biggest day of your life is going to be the biggest. The days you think are going to be big ones are never as big as you make them out to be in your head. It's the regular days, the ones that start out normal, those are the days that end up being the biggest."
--Izzy Stevens

For quite some time I've been looking for a new job, one that means health insurance and a stable, calculable income, and for months I've come up with nothing.  James got hired "temp-to-hire" at Yamaha in September and while we are hopeful his contract will be bought out in December (meaning he will come on board as a Yamaha employee, with all the amazing benefits), I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Ever since my hip surgery in March I have longed for a job that would get me off my feet. I don't know if I will ever forgive myself for cutting my rehab short and going back to work before I was painfree. I worry I've done more harm than good, working long walking hours to make ends meet while James was unemployed, and I'm honestly too scared to go back to the Ortho doctor, out of fear he will confirm that I've done more damage and that I need another surgery.

This past Wednesday I was off from work at Stacked, about to start my day which consisted of errands and laundry when I got a phone call asking me if I had time for an interview today or tomorrow for a job opportunity that opened up.  I thought I should play it safe and pick "tomorrow" so that I'd have time to prepare, but in the end I was asked to come in merely two hours later because they had already booked interviews for the next day.  Such short notice!  I printed out the latest copy of my resume and hurried to curl my hair before pounding down an iced coffee and running out the door.  I felt wholly unprepared and a little rusty when I showed up to speak with the President and Vice President, but apparently I wow'ed them nonetheless.  They gave me the usual lip service, telling me they really liked speaking with me and that they'd get back to me the next day.  I drove home thinking I wouldn't tell anyone about this, like it never happened, because I probably wasn't going to get the job, and last time I interviewed for a job I told everyone about it just to let them all down when I didn't get picked.  As I was trudging up the stairs to our apartment I got a text from a number I didn't recognize-- "U got the job!"

I called them back and it turns out they cancelled their interviews for the next day, and I start on Monday! :)

I wish I felt total relief or excitement at that moment, and admittedly I did a little bit, but if you know me you know that I hate confrontation and all I could think about was how I was going to explain to Stacked that I needed to quit on the spot.  The next morning I walked into the restaurant with as much confidence as I could muster, and in what has to have been an act of God, the one manager I preferred to speak with just happened to be there, and in a great mood.  He took it so well! I was honest and told him I had been working towards this for a long time, that my family needed this and that I needed this, for my health's sake.  He was completely agreeable and actually gave me many congratulations. He reassured me of my strong work ethic and said I am great.  And that I'd be great.  And that if I ever needed anything, including one last free meal, that he'd take care of me.  And most importantly, that I didn't even need to put in a two-week's notice.  And then the relief and excitement really came.  Even in my wildest dreams I could never have pictured that conversation going so well. I bounced out of there and home to my husband to tell him the good news. :)

So today was my last day of part-time life, and I have to say I am a little sad.  I will miss my mornings drinking tea and catching up on chores and tv shows.  I will miss lunch dates with friends and being able to make appointments at non-peak hours (when the working folk get their stuff done).  But I will tell you what I won't miss, I won't miss the inconsistent hours, or financial instability that came of it, I won't miss working on holidays and weekends, I won't miss the girl-drama or the not finding out about my schedule until the week before, but most of all I won't miss coming home with swollen feet and aching joints.  Call me and old lady, but that is truly my favorite part!

Timing is a funny thing.  It's like you try so hard to make something happen, you try for such a long time and you try every avenue possible, and nothing happens.  You wake up expecting to fold laundry and stay in your pajamas most of the day, and the next thing you know you're driving to the next biggest opportunity life has to offer.  One of those times where, in the blink of an eye, your whole life changes. Just like that. I guess everything does happen for a reason, and I'm so glad.

If Only We Can Make it 11 More Days...

The only excuse I have for not blogging in weeks is that I'm getting married in 11 days... (11 days!!!!!!!!!!!) and real life has swallowed me up. Thankfully, I am blessed to be one of those super-organized types, and to be honest, the wedding stuff is moving right along, and most of my work is finished.  My Bachelorette party is this weekend and after that, I'm home free....

We can't wait to be married.  It's literally k i l l i n g us.  We have been so good and patient, trying not to fixate on the fun day [and lifetime!] that awaits us, but now every time we hang out, 99% of each conversation is some variation of "I can't wait to be married/Only 11 more days!/I wish we just lived together already!/I am so excited/Are you excited?/OH MY GOSH We're getting MARRIED!"... you get the idea.. Impatience is setting in, along with frustration!

Well in the meantime, we have been extremely busy, or should I say I have been extremely busy?  (Don't get me wrong..James is one of the hardest working people I know, working 40 hours a week but also choosing to do Bible study with me three nights a week, and relentlessly hack away at our wedding todo list.... but he doesn't have to put up with the daily stuff I do!  Can you say, David's Bridal? sakfj$%*&^%*as^&*^%kfjasdfh!)

Three weeks ago my parents renewed their wedding vows in our backyard, while celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary.  It was a wonderful time to be home and it was also a very wonderful thing to watch.
Dad reciting a vow-poem he wrote for my mom.
I guess this year my family chose to be all-about weddings?

(love being HOME)

We also snuck in a Padre's game while we were home.... I couldn't resist! I love my baseball, and not having cable has been SO sad this season! (Not to mention, they aren't on cable at home anyways! Grrr!)

Thennn it was my Birthday!  James and I started the morning off at the old OC courthouse, getting our marriage license all taken care of (halfway there!!!).  We had a delicious lunch at the Cheesecake Factory (what is a wedding diet?) and then broke in the pool at my new apartment, followed by a good movie and spending the evening playing games with friends and eating cake.

Oh, I love him,

Did I mention I got a new job?  Well, I got a new job.  Now I work as a waitress at Stacked, which--if you haven't been--is this awesome new restaurant in Cerritos started by the previous owners of BJ's.  They use iPads and the whole concept is very new and hip.  If you ever want to come in and visit, come when I'm working and ask to be seated in my section! I get paid to talk to you people all day :]

We've been blessed so much recently... I can't really even put it into words.  God continues to show and reveal more and more to us each day, and pursuing Him alongside my best friend has been something very cool to watch as it unfolds.  We've also had the opportunity to build so many new friendships with some of the people in our Bible study and it has been nothing short of a-ma-zing to see the way God is working today.  We live in such a precious time! I can't even explain it!! I hope we are knitted and held together by truth all the days of our lives.

So... I guess we're in the home stretch now!  I have boxes overflowing in my living room, full of things necessary for the day-of, and/or the honeymoon, which reminds me I might want to start thinking about packing.. We got [some of] our engagement shoot photos from our photographer and all I can say is that I am so excited to see photos from the wedding day, because these shots made me grin from ear to ear!  Man, so much literal blood, sweat, and tears have gone into the planning and preparation for this day... I'll be darned if it's not one of the best days of my life....

My Best Superbowl Weekend

Superbowl weekend has come and gone, but it sure was great.  On Saturday I was lucky enough to be invited to go to Disneyland with James' closest friends (and their girlfriend) courtesy of Andy and Lauren who are able to get people in for free because they work there.  We were there for almost 11 hours and couldn't even make it till World of Color because we were so beat.

James, Me, Stephanie, Ben, Brooke, Greg, Andy, Lauren

After the parks we went to Stacked, where Brooke works--also possibly one of the tastiest restaurants I've been to in a long time, and you get to order on an iPad!  If you haven't been to Stacked it's a great meal (there are deals at Happy Hour so it's affordable) and it's such a fun atmosphere, brought to you by the same people who brought you BJ's Pizza.

On Sunday we all went to The Fold, to the disc golf course (my first time in MONTHS, I've missed it!), and then to watch the Super Bowl! It was a pretty bland match-up, but if we were favoring one team over the other I suppose it was the Giants, so in turn it was a good day.

Ben had been waiting for this day for quite a while because he made his own brewed beer (I think he started around Christmas time) and it coincidentally was "ready" as of Sunday.  Already a little nervous that it would be gross, he was very happy when it exceeded everyone's expectations and wasn't too bad at all.  I thought it tasted a lot like a Hefeweizen.

After the game we spent the evening in the jacuzzi and all of the boys reminisced on their uhh.. golden years?  I don't really know what to call them, but there were a lot of great stories recounted.  The whole weekend was so enjoyable, it's hard to go back to school today (maybe because I am still exhausted).

My first shift at Starbucks starts tomorrow, bright and early! I am trying to stay positive about 5am shifts, but I feel like I've been here before.  Maybe I will actually be able to go to sleep early so that I am in a better mood tomorrow morning...

Thank you, Lord, for blessing me by surrounding me with so many great people and opportunities!
